Tamanu Oil: The "Green Gold" Ingredient Behind Two of Our Formulas

Tamanu oil has earned the nickname "Green Gold" and once you understand what's actually in it, that reputation starts to make sense. At Sunsejoy, we use it in two of our products for good reason.

Where Tamanu Oil Comes From

Tamanu oil is pressed from the nuts of Calophyllum inophyllum, a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. The oil is thick, dark greenish-brown, and has a distinctive earthy scent. That color and richness come from its high concentration of fatty acids, antioxidants, and a compound called calophyllolide, which gives the oil much of its skin-calming strength.

Traditional practitioners across Polynesia used tamanu for centuries to soothe irritated skin, support recovery from sun damage, and visibly reduce the appearance of scars. It was applied to a wide range of skin concerns, from sunburns to dermatitis. That long track record is part of why it eventually made its way into modern plant-based skincare.

What It Does for Skin

Tamanu oil works on a few levels.

It supports skin's natural recovery process, which is why it has traditionally been used on scars, stretch marks, and skin that's slow to bounce back. Research suggests it may support new tissue formation, making it a valuable ingredient for skin that needs active renewal rather than just moisture.

It's deeply calming, which makes it a good fit for acne-prone, reactive, and redness-prone skin. The calophyllolide content is largely responsible for this. Skin tends to look and feel noticeably calmer with consistent use.

It hydrates without clogging pores. Despite its richness, tamanu oil is considered non-comedogenic, meaning it absorbs well and doesn't block pores the way some heavy oils can.

It also contains antioxidants that help protect against environmental damage, which plays a role in how skin ages over time.

Who It's Good For

Tamanu oil is versatile. It tends to work well across skin types, including dry, combination, and sensitive. It's especially worth trying if you're dealing with blemishes, post-acne marks, bug bites, or skin that's just taking longer to recover than you'd like.

How We Use It at Sunsejoy

We include tamanu oil in two of our formulas.

The first is our Revive + Repair Body Butter, where it works alongside other nourishing botanicals to support deep hydration and skin renewal. It's a good option for dry or rough areas that need consistent, daily attention.

The second is our Spot Treatment Oil, a targeted formula designed to calm bug bites and blemishes quickly. Tamanu's skin-calming and restorative properties make it a natural fit for spot use, where you want something that works without irritating the surrounding skin.

Both products are fully plant-based, free from harsh additives, and formulated to let ingredients like tamanu do what they're genuinely good at.
